Design Concept

The trophy design is an "Anti Oloid” Shape. Besides its various functions in engineering, in an artistic view, Anti Oloid Shape is a perfect form to reflect the ideas of endless stream, the Chinese saying 川流不息, and at the same time, it has a void in the center which symbolize 虛懷若谷 - open-minded for diversity. These elements match the urban development ideal of the Greater Bay Area, which inspires this trophy design.
Material for the trophy stand is concrete, the base element of the modern architecture.

1. Background

With the mission of elevation of urban design standard and improvement of the livability of the cities in the Greater Bay Area, the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design is now taking lead to cultivate a culture of academic and professional exchanges in urban design knowledge and practical experience, in collaboration with Urban Design Organisations from Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, to establish the Greater Bay Area Urban Designer Alliance, which was inaugurated on 17 Jun 2020 in a signing ceremony officiated by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR.

The Greater Bay Area Urban Designer Alliance is a professional platform for promotion of collaboration among urban design professionals, practices and organizations in the Greater Bay Area. It will address the global trend of main streaming urban design in city development especially in China, and subsequently establish the professional recognition for urban design practitioners in the Greater Bay Area.

Major events for the Greater Bay Area Urban Designer Alliance include the Greater Bay Area Urban Design Conference, and the Greater Bay Areas Urban Designer Awards.

The Greater Bay Area Urban Design Conference is the first urban design related international conference on Greater Bay Area, which is a biannual event organized by founding members of the Greater Bay Area Urban Designer Alliance by rotation, and HKIUD will host the first conference in Hong Kong in November 2020.

The Greater Bay Area Urban Design Awards 2020 will be organized by HKIUD in Hong Kong every other year, and invitation for nomination will be launched in July 2020.

HKIUD cordially invites all interested HKIUD members (all categories) to join the HKIUD Greater Bay Area Urban Design Awards Awards Trophy Design Competition.

2. Award Category

The Greater Bay Area Urban Design Awards 2020 will include the following categories:

  • GBA Urban Design Award – Built Project
  • GBA Urban Design Award – Urban Intervention
  • GBA Urban Design Award – Plan / Concept

There would be Grand Awards, Merit Award and Nominated Award for each category. Each Grand Award and Merit Award winner would be presented with a trophy.

3. Objective of Competition:

  • To obtain an innovative trophy design of professional design quality to celebrate the prestige Award winners.
  • To engage our members in the events organized by the Greater Bay Area Urban Designer Alliance and HKIUD.
  • To provide an opportunity for members to showcase their creativity.

    ALL categories of HKIUD members are welcome to join the competition

    6. Prizes:

    • 1 No. of Winner: HK$4,000 Cash Prize
    • 2 Nos. of Honorable Mention: HK$1,000 Cash Prize

    7. Design Criteria:

  • Original and innovative trophy design of professional design quality to celebrate the prestige Award winners.
  • Reflect the values of HKIUD and Greater Bay Area Urban Design Award.
  • Material and colour to be proposed by participant.
  • Logo of Greater Bay Area Urban Design Award must be incorporated. (Click here for the preliminary logo design). Suggestion on Improvement of the logo design is welcome.
  • Production cost for each trophy should be around HK$1,500.
  • Max trophy size is 150mmW x 350mmH x 60mmD.


    • 8. Submission:

    For submission, please send the application form together with all design materials by email, with the subject as ‘HKIUD Greater Bay Area Urban Design Awards Awards Trophy Design Competition – Design Submission ’, to HKIUD Secretariat (gba@hkiud.org) on or before 30 September 2020(Monday),12:00pm. Result will be announced in around two months from the submission deadline.
